Juan Tizol (1900 - 1984)

Tenor saxophonist Enric Peidro presents a new and interesting recording dedicated to the figure of the great Porto Rican composer and trombonist Juan Tizol, a prominent member of Duke Elington's orchestra for two decades and author of songs of great importance in the history of jazz such as “Caravan” or “Caravan”  among many others.

This new album, released in late september 2024, is not only a fascinating musical journey through Tizol's compositions, but also the first work ever dedicated to the compositional work of this extraordinary musician, wich was extremely spread and sometimes very difficult to access, despite its enormous appeal and quality. 

After a long process of research and location of his works in libraries and archives of different countries and with the help of
 of New York University Professor and Tizol's biographer Basilio Serrano, Peidro has been able to compile, preserve and adapt for his interpretation a large part of the of work the Porto Rican composer,  including compositions that were never recorded and that will see the light of day for the  first time thanks to this interesting project.

The album, entitled Tizol's Delicatessen, The Musical Legacy of Juan Tizol Vol I, will be followed by a second volume in a collection that aims to preserve and update the legacy of this great musician.

The album's presentation tour will begin in January 2025 and also celebrates the 125th anniversary of the birth of Tizol, born in Vega Baja (Puerto Rico) on January 22, 1900.

Undoubtedly this is a very interesting project that rescues from oblivion and brings the work of this excellent and versatile composer back to the spotlight, through Peidro's personal vision wich include new arrangements that preserve the original  essence of the compositions and a careful selection of repertoire presenting a program as varied as attractive, which highlights the great quality of the work of the Puerto Rican composer and proofs that his compositional legacy still  maintains an enviable freshness and reveals itself as an ideal material for improvisation within the context of a jazz quartet.
